The Chocolate for true Aficionados

In 2017, while en-route to a friend’s wedding in Italy, I was fortunate enough to have a stopover in Zurich international airport in Switzerland. My layover was about 4 hours long, which gave me time to have a snack, walk around, and do a little duty-free shopping. Being the chocolate junky that I am, I decided to step into a very chic looking chocolate store in the airport to spoil myself a little. For those of you who love chocolate as much as I do, this was truly one of the best discoveries of my life.

A surprise discovery..

Sprüngli, the Swiss chocolatier is what I would classify as the Rolls-Royce of chocolates in a world of generic Hondas, Toyotas and Mazdas. All of them good brands in their own right, but nothing like the true pedigree and tasteful creation that is a Rolls-Royce. Anyhow, back to the chocolates. I asked one of the store clerks to select an assortment of their most popular truffles, chocolate bars and mini macaroons. Boy was I in for a surprise when it ended up costing me about 70 Euro for 3 dozen pieces, but then again, when you’re looking for the best, be prepared to pay for it.

A short walk back to where I was sitting, and I quickly sat down and unwrapped the tastefully packaged chocolates, chose my first morsel and popped it into my mouth. Nothing will prepare you for your first taste of a Sprüngli truffle! The chocolate was rich and creamy, the inside filled with a light and airy hazelnut cream that was truly like nothing I ever had. It simply oozed of quality, quality and more quality. Needless to say, I made short work of the rest of the chocolates over the next few days.

Have they been around long?

Sprüngli after all have been around since 1836. That’s right, nearly 200 years of chocolate-making experience. Made with nothing but the finest ingredients including Swiss milk, Cacao sourced from exotic locations such as Bolivia, Ghana, Cuba, Mexico and Bolivia, harvested by hand by small-scale farmers. I guess it’s true what they say about the attention to detail that goes into everything that the Swiss do!

Now here’s the good news for those of you reading this who do not live in Switzerland. Sprungli delivers! That’s right, all you have to do is go to their website, make your selections and have it delivered to you by courier within a matter of days. Pricey as it may be, it’s definitely worth it even if you only try it once in your life!
