Don’t fix what isn’t broken seems to be the mantra for the 2022 Toyota Sequoia. For well over a decade, the current model has been surprising critics and delighting enthusiasts alike.

Quick Takes

• The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is a time-tested full-sized SUV with available off-roading capability while offering superior roominess.
• Offered in up to six trims depending on the region, there is one that suits nearly everyone.

• It is powered by a 5.7L V8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that can deliver 381 hp and tow over 7000 lbs.

• Pricing starts at $50,500 US and goes higher depending on powertrain and package choices.

Many city dwellers dream of going into the rugged wilderness but also want to share the experience with the family. As a result, the need for a spacious yet totally capable off-roading machine became the driving force behind the creation of the Toyota Sequoia. Based on the Tundra pickup truck, it is made primarily for the North American market but can also be found in Costa Rica.

A Sequoia For Everyone

The Toyota Sequoia is designed to be the one-stop reference for all full-sized SUVs. From practical roominess to irreproachable luxury, there is a trim level for nearly everyone.   The popular Limited trim offers the convenience of navigation, a power liftgate, front and rear parking sonars, leather interior, and heated front seats. For added comfort, the Platinum trim adds air suspension, ventilated front seats, heated 2nd-row captain seats, and a rear entertainment system with a Blu-ray Disc player. And for those who truly desire to escape the urban jungle, the TRD Pro package offers an off-road-capable suspension with rear piggyback air shocks by Fox, 18-inch black forged aluminum wheels by BBS, a black tubular roof rack, and a massive quarter-inch thick TRD Pro skid plate.

In addition, three extra trims are available in the American market: a base no-frills SR5 for people who just love the cabin capacity and reliability of the Sequoia platform; a TRD Sport package that adds performance-tuned sway bars and Bilstein shocks as well as exclusive appearance enhancements; and a bold interpretation of the Limited trim called Nightshade Special Edition with a dark chrome grille, black door handles and mirrors, and unique 20-inch black alloy wheels.

In the US, the Toyota Sequoia is offered in both 2WD and 4WD drivetrains. However, the Canadian market only sells the 4WD Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro versions, while Costa Rica just sees the 4WD Platinum.

Don’t Fix What Isn’t Broken

It’s been 14 years since the introduction of the second-generation Toyota Sequoia. As much as automotive writers have been begging for a new iteration, the legendary SUV still turns heads today with appearance refreshes and the addition of modern features such as Apple Carplay and Android Auto, state-of-the-art driving assistance systems, and LED lighting all around. The massive i-FORCE 5.7L V8 engine is still a formidable beast, delivering 381 hp and 401 lb.-ft of torque. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the vehicle is capable of towing well over 7000 lbs of cargo.

A Bright Future Ahead

The arrival of an all-new redesigned 2022 Toyota Tundra pickup truck will most likely spell the end of the venerable second-gen Sequoia. Rumor mills report that a V6 engine will power the truck, possibly a turbocharged variant of the 3.5L found in the smaller Tacoma, or the even twin-turbo 3.4L found in the Lexus LS 500. Not to mention Toyota’s successful history of hybridizing its car lineup, an electrified Tundra and Sequoia remains a realistic possibility.

Should You Get One?

Pricing for the 2022 Sequoia starts at $50,500 US for a 2WD base SR5 model and can go north of $70,000 US depending on the powertrain and package. Whichever trim is chosen, you get a ridiculously reliable and practical vehicle that can haul people, lots of cargo, and go pretty much anywhere (paved roads, or not!). In our opinion, that value alone is worth every penny.
