It was 70 years ago that the German automaker built what will become the flagship and gold standard of Grand Touring cars. Now introduced as a part of the prestigious Mercedes-AMG lineup, the SL-Class aims to please a new generation of adventure-seekers and driving enthusiasts.

Quick Takes

• The all-new SL-Class is now part of the Mercedes-AMG family of performance luxury cars.

• It will be offered in three variants – the SL 55 and 63 are powered by a 4.0L V8 twin-turbo with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, while the SL 43 is delivered with a 2.0L 4-cylinder e-turbo.

• Highly customizable, most cars will be built to order in Bremen, Germany.

The Legend Is Born

Seventy years ago, Mercedes-Benz made a bid to return to Grand Prix racing for the first time after World War II. The W194, from which the SL will eventually be born, was intended as a one-off car entering the 1952 racecar season.
As a weight-saving measure, gullwing doors were installed in lieu of traditional swinging doors. This led to the model’s distinctive looks, setting the stage for an automotive icon that is still standing the test of time today.

The Spirit Of Grand Touring

Driving enthusiasts know when they have a great car in their hands. As a result, the all-new SL has been redrawn from the grounds up to honor its past and to innovate into the future to inspire a new generation.
Gone are the heavy hardtop cabriolet. The Mercedes-AMG SL Roadster is a stylish soft-top that harkens back to the glory days of carefree driving along a coastline or the rebellious escapes of young wealth.

Three Variants - One Purpose

With their roaring 4.0L V8 twin-turbo powerplant, the SL 55 and 63 are a remarkable evolution of the celebrated nameplate. Moreover, the confidence expressed on the road by these behemoth engines is further enhanced by an all-wheel-drive powertrain, equipped for the first time. Pushing 476 and 585 hp respectively, both flavors offer a takeoff to 100 km/h in less than 4 seconds.
The entry-level SL 43 will join the lineup in a later release as the SL-Class’ first-ever 4-cylinder turbocharged rear-wheel-drive roadster. Sourcing technology directly from Mercedes’ experience in Formula One, the mild-hybrid turbo is spooled by a 48-volt system to deliver instantaneous boost across the full rev spectrum without delay.

A Masterclass Of Design

Available in a multitude of finishes and seat coverings, the level of customizable detail is second-to-none. From seat coverings to roof color, no part is spared to ensure that the resulting car truly belongs to no other owner.

Infotainment ergonomics are assured by Mercedes-Benz’s award-winning MBUX system. Intuitive, innovative, and certainly easy to use, the aim is to provide an unrivaled driving experience that is second-to-none.
The cars will be produced in the city of Bremen, in Northern Germany.
